Excerpt from FIELDS

I can't sleep, so I write
I write where you can't find me
I write between the lines and under the covers
I write in corners where your image lingers

I can't sleep so I imagine
Other dead poets join me
They want to know you
I whisper your name in the dark
I tell them your jokes and they fall in love with you
They hold my hands and kiss my cheeks
to understand what it is like to be a part of your life
I have so many words in me with nowhere to run

They stay in this cage, malnutritioned
A field before them
A sun between them
A song beyond them
They sing freedom songs
In this chest, they sing freedom songs
I close my eyes and join them

Come inside of me
I have fields inside of me
I bend low and pick thoughts
I sing into the sky and pray God is dancing

Stay inside of me
I have fields inside of me
They are full of sunflowers
You like to run barefoot through them when no one is looking
I watch you from behind a tree
We are insomniacs accidentally slipping into this dream
We are figments of our own imaginations
I laugh into the sky cause I like this game . . .
